Preservation is the code — and the story.
Nostalgia Games Studio rescues classic turn-based strategy and economic games from the abandonware era and brings them back for modern play. We preserve them faithfully, reimagine them thoughtfully, and document how they — and the people who made them — came to be.
Great games are stranded.
Plenty of landmark titles from the early home-computer era are stuck in limbo: the disks are fragile, the hardware is gone, and "abandonware" leaves them unowned and unplayed. We bring them back — readable, runnable, and documented — so they can be experienced and understood again rather than lost.
We're careful about it. Abandonware is a community norm, not a legal status, so we credit creators accurately, treat living and deceased creators' legacies with care, and pursue rights diligence before anything ever goes commercial.
The four editions
Every game sits on a spectrum from faithful preservation to fresh reinvention — you pick how close to the original you want to be.

Original
The original binary itself, emulated in your browser — the game exactly as it shipped.

Faithful
The same game, loop for loop, rebuilt with a modern web interface we design — faithful underneath, comfortable to play today.

Revival
The Faithful game brought online — play live and simultaneously against others on the web, instead of passing one keyboard.

Successor
A full 2.0 — the original's premise carried forward into a brand-new, modern game of our own.
From floppy to playable.
For each title we read the original disk image, recover the source, and rebuild the game so it behaves exactly as it did. The original — emulated in your browser — doubles as our conformance oracle: we drive it with scripted decisions and check our re-creation against its output before we trust a single number. Only the disk reader and detokenizer change from platform to platform, so the pipeline is repeatable across a whole catalog.
Cartels & Cutthroats (SSI, 1981) was our proof of concept — taken end-to-end, from raw floppy image to a working, validated build.
Every title carries its history.
Preservation is the code and the story. Alongside the playable editions, each game ships with a researched account of how it was made — its origins, creators, studio and era, cross-platform release timeline, and place in computing history. Our discipline: cite sources, separate documented fact from lore, flag uncertainty rather than inventing, and credit creators accurately. Even a game we can't yet re-create still gets its full history.
